Mista Brown (Tighten Up London) Top 10

1. The Whip – The Etheopians
(Never get weary of this Rocksteady classic. Guaranteed to fill any dancefloor!)
2. Scare Him – The Maytals
(100 mile an hour early Reggae scorcher out of the Leslie Kong camp!)
3. Tribute To Drumbago – The Dynamites
(Makes me laugh everytime I play it! Great intro – cracking little tune that just doesn’t stop! Also known as “Last Call” by “The Silver Stars” if you go by the UK Trojan pressing)
4. Mun-Dun-Gu – Sound Dimension
(Heavy Reggae/Soul groove from out of Studio One!)
5. Unchained – Bob Andy
(The best song ever written about slavery/freedom? Certainly one of the best vocal performances ever recorded regardless of genre!!!)
6. Out In The Rain – Dennis Brown
(Wicked soulful Reggae from the “Crown Prince” – the flipside dub mix is murder – subtle and clever interchange between vocal and riddim. Essential)
7. No Wicked Can’t Reign – Ripton Hilton
(Early Eek A Mouse Roots stormer – a Tighten Up classic for sure!)
8. Babylon Too Rough – Gregory Isaacs
(Better than DB??? Maybe. Certainly darker and more atmospheric and the dub – “I stand Accused” is truly menacing. Gergory at his best for my money)
9. Better Days – Carlton & The Shoes
(How many bongos can you fit on a record??? Absolutely phenomenal piece of vinyl – Carlton Manning and his Shoes with a haunting vocal over a relentless Lee Perry production!)
10. See The Dread Deh – Rupert Reid
(Roots classic! Heard this once and was singing the tune for days. Haunting, beautiful and TUFF! Great combination!)

  1. Hi Jed,
this is just a top-ten for an itnerview. I think that Mista Brown and TimP have some live podcasts and some anthology (artists/producers/labels) podcasts over at podomatic.com.
